Real-time text chat via collaborative editing systems

Online text chat is a very popular Internet-based application. Previous studies have identified several problems with standard text chat systems. Real-time collaborative editing systems can be used for text chat. This paper compares text chat via collaborative editing systems with text chat via standard text chat systems. It has been identified that standard text chat system do not maintain some of the consistency properties implemented in collaborative editing systems. Without such properties, standard text chat systems may create confusion to the users in some scenarios. Furthermore, some of the problems with standard text chat systems can be resolved by using collaborative editing systems. This is due to the flexibility of the editing environment over the standard text chat environment.
